Director Of Advancement

Job summary: The Director of Advancement shall be a person strongly supportive to the mission and philosophy of Shenandoah Valley Academy who will assist the school leadership in the management and cultivation of all aspects of school growth for the organization. Responsibilities include development and implementation of strategic growth and fundraising strategies for the organization, such as fundraising programs and endowment growth through donor identification, recruitment, and relationship cultivation and other activities to support fund advancement and other overall organizational growth strategies. As a new position in the organization, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop a comprehensive development and advancement program with an advancement team to help support the mission of SVA and ensure the financial stability of the school.

Essential duties and responsibilities:
Primary Duties: Fund Development

1. Plan and implement an individual strategy for major donors. Make donor contacts and requests for funds by most appropriate method to achieve overall financial goals.
2. Coordinate annual pledging events, fundraising campaigns or other events deemed helpful to SVA advancement in cooperation with advancement team and volunteers as needed.
3. Work to expand development reach to new and lapsed donors using all appropriate means.
4. Develop strategies to grow the organization's endowments and estate planning; ensure proper legal practices are followed.
5. Work with and give support and resources to the Alumni Association and coordinate on fundraising projects.
6. Engage an active development committee, in coordination with the SVA Board and administration.
7. Develop relationships with local community leaders and businesses and present informational/marketing material for potential business partnerships when needed.
8. Ensure the highest standards of fiscal responsibility and data integrity.

Secondary Duties: School Advancement

1. Oversee advancement of school growth and the Department of Advancement.
2. Facilitate the creation of a team-based, highly collaborative approach to Department of Advancement objectives; provide positive and highly productive leadership to all team members, which could include a recruiter, director of admissions, alumni or volunteers, and other key staff members as needed.
3. Coordinate with administration and board to support the development objectives of the school.
4. Interface with the media as needed and use school website and social networking to promote advancement.
5. Provide counsel to the administrator and other leadership as requested.


1. Train board members, key volunteers and staff in best practices in advancement.
2. Ask for ongoing participation through prayer, voluntary service and financial support.
3. Stay current and connected to Adventist business-minded organizations, such as ASI and PSI.
4. Set written goals and work plan with the school leadership team.
5. Report regularly to administration, board and others as required.
6. Any other tasks as assigned by the principal.

Experience: Minimum two to five years successful experience in major fundraising, preferably in Adventist education.
Proven track record of major donor gift requests and acquisition.
Capital campaign experience preferred.
Experience in business development and promotion, sales, marketing and/or PR preferred.

Education: Bachelor’s degree required

Skills: Experience in business development and promotion, sales, marketing and/or PR preferred.
Self starter, capable of developing strategies, plans and procedures needed for a comprehensive program.
Ability to intuitively recognize needs of the school and adapt and grow program to meet those needs.
Strong communicator, have excellent written, oral communication, presentation and interpersonal skills.
Must possess strong leadership skills, be able to motivate and influence others, and have an executive presence.
Must be able to think creatively and strategically, have excellent judgment and be able to work in a changing environment.
Needs excellent time management skills; ability to prioritize tasks and program needs.
High level of confidentiality and discretion required, demonstrating a commitment to the highest standards of personal and professional integrity.
Skilled in the use of technology, especially Raiser's Edge, word processing, finance and presentation applications.
Interest in all aspects of education and a dedication to promoting the SVA 's fundraising priorities through developing excellent relationships with alumni, donors, faculty, academy leaders, trustees, volunteers and church members.
Commitment to the vision, mission, and objectives of the school and is able to clearly and enthusiastically communicate it to others.
A wholesome ministry viewpoint and an active member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
Commitment to working at a boarding school, understanding that beyond regular office hours, attendance at staff meetings, evening and weekend supervision, and sponsorships as requested may be required.
